Garden Clearance Chelsea - Health & Safety Policy
This Health & Safety policy sets out the commitment of Garden Clearance Chelsea to protect the health, safety and welfare of everyone affected by our garden clearance, waste removal and rubbish clearance services. Our aim is to deliver safe, compliant and environmentally responsible operations for domestic and commercial garden waste projects. The policy applies to all employees, contractors and visitors engaged in garden waste collection, site clearance, green waste recycling and rubbish removal across our service area.
The policy scope covers planning, risk assessment, safe systems of work, training, equipment, vehicle safety and controlled disposal. It is designed to be read alongside operational procedures such as manual handling worksheets, vehicle loading procedures and hazardous materials controls. All staff must apply these principles to daily tasks and report unsafe conditions immediately. This document complements statutory obligations while being practical for field teams and administrative staff.
Responsibilities
Clear roles ensure effective safety performance. Key responsibilities include:- Management — provide leadership, resources and monitoring; ensure risk assessments, permits and insurance are in place.
- Supervisors — implement safe systems of work, carry out site briefings and ensure PPE is used.
- Operatives — follow procedures, use PPE, report hazards and take part in training.
- Contractors and visitors — comply with site rules and report to the site supervisor.
Risk Assessment and Planning
Before any Chelsea garden clearance, a documented risk assessment will be completed. Assessments identify hazards such as sharp objects, trip/fall risks, unstable structures, gas cylinders, contaminated soil, invasive plants and biological hazards. Controls follow the hierarchy of risk reduction: elimination, substitution, engineering controls, administrative controls and PPE. Site-specific method statements must be prepared for complex or high-risk jobs.
Personal Protective Equipment and Manual Handling
Operatives are required to wear appropriate PPE for each task: gloves, eye protection, high-visibility clothing, safety boots and respiratory protection where dust or bioaerosols are present. Manual handling training is mandatory to reduce musculoskeletal injuries during lifting, carrying and loading of garden waste. Mechanical aids (trolleys, hoists, wheelbarrows) will be used where practicable to reduce physical strain.COSHH and Hazardous Materials — substances hazardous to health (paint, solvents, pesticides, asbestos-containing materials) encountered during garden waste clearance must be handled under strict controls. Suspected hazardous items are isolated and reported for specialist removal. Our rubbish collection crews receive guidance on segregation of hazardous waste from green waste and general refuse to ensure safe disposal methods and legal compliance.
Vehicles, Plant and Site Safety
Vehicles and plant used for garden clearance, rubbish removal and green waste transport are maintained under a documented fleet maintenance program. Drivers must hold appropriate licences and complete vehicle checks before each shift. Loading procedures ensure safe weight distribution and secure restraint of loads to prevent spillage during transit. Traffic management is put in place for roadside collections, including signage, cones and banksman where required.
Training, Communication and Supervision
All staff receive induction training covering core policies, emergency procedures and specific training for roles involving hazardous materials or plant operation. Regular toolbox talks, refresher training and on-the-job coaching reinforce safe work practices. Communication channels ensure supervisors can escalate concerns, and staff are empowered to stop work if they encounter an immediate danger.
Incident Reporting and Emergency Procedures — incidents, near misses and occupational illnesses must be reported promptly using the company reporting system. First aid provisions and emergency contact arrangements are maintained at every site. In the event of an environmental release, fire or serious injury, work will cease until the scene is safe and authorities are notified where required. Investigation of incidents identifies root causes and corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement
Safety performance is monitored through inspections, audits and performance indicators such as incident rates, training completion and corrective action closure. Regular reviews of this policy and associated procedures are carried out to reflect changes in legislation, best practice and operational lessons learned. All changes are communicated to personnel and records retained.Environmental and Waste Management Commitments — as a rubbish and garden waste company we prioritise waste minimisation, segregation, reuse and recycling. Garden waste is diverted from landfill where possible and processed through appropriate green waste recycling streams. Hazardous and controlled wastes are segregated and transferred to authorised facilities in accordance with regulatory requirements.
This policy is implemented across all Garden Clearance Chelsea operations and applies to our entire service area for garden waste clearance, rubbish clearance services and site clearance activities. Management endorses this policy and expects full cooperation from every employee. The policy will be reviewed at least annually or when operational changes necessitate.
